Cushions have a deep relationship with their owners, or is it the opposite?
Anyway, picking cushions for outdoor furniture is no less important than selecting the furniture itself. Maybe a little.
Cushions for furniture are like a décor for a room; we can live in a room with four plain walls, but it would feel like a black-and-white life.
When it comes to purchasing cushions for outdoor furniture, Your clients mostly care about three things
One: The cushions’ appearance and their compatibility with the furniture.
Two: The cushions should look soft and comfortable.
Three: The cushions should BE soft and comfortable.
“What’s in it for me?”
I’ll walk you through the different types of outdoor cushions we manufacture, what textiles we offer, and whether or not the cushions are suitable for your needs.
Take our word, cause we are a wholesaler of outdoor furniture cushions in the field for quite a while (around 15 years).

Firstly The Fabrics
Currently, we offer four types:
1- 180g Polyester Fabric(180g stands for 180 grams per square)
Let’s face it; when buying Polyester Fabric, you get what you pay for; the polyester fabric is sexy yet not UV resistant. (Compared to the two kings Olefin and Sunbrella)
It has various styles and endless colors. Are your clients on a budget? If yes, then this is your way to go 🤝
otherwise, it’s not a wise choice for investment.
“What is Polyester Fabric?”
Polyester is a synthetic fiber (Man-Made), so it’s long-lasting and stain-free.
However, there are several disadvantages to using polyester for cushions.
– Not Very Breathable
which can make it uncomfortable to sit on for long periods of time.
– Not as soft as other materials
so it may not be as comfortable to sit on.
– Not Very Environmentally Friendly
WHY? because it is made from petroleum products.
– Fast to Fade
Another “not-the-best feature” is that Polyester Fabric fades faster than other cushion materials.
You’ll frequently see fade resistance ratings for polyester textiles. Its UV resistance rating indicates the length of time that material may be exposed to UV radiation. (e.g., 2,000-hour fade resistant polyester)
Despite these disadvantages, polyester is still a popular choice for cushions because it is affordable and durable.
2- Spun polyester fabric (200/220gsm)
Secondly, we have the Spun Polyester Fabric which is a better choice than Polyester fabric.
So you might reconsider if you are going for patio cushions wholesale.
IT IS TWICE AS DURABLE AS THE POLYESTER FABRICS
The Spun Polyester Fabric is very soft, long-lasting, and has the look and feel of cotton while offering strength, as well as its all-weather and sun resistance.
The reason why it’s very durable is due to the fact: it weighs more than Polyester Fabric.
STORYTIME:Â
Dr. George de Mestral created the Spun Polyester Fabrics in Switzerland in the late 1940s. He was inspired to create the fabric after observing the burdock burrs sticking to his dog’s fur. He developed the fabric and named it “VELCRO”, a combination of the words “velvet” and “crochet”.
The fabric was first used in the automotive industry, but it quickly became popular for various applications. It is now used in everything from clothing to furniture.
“Where is the Spun Polyester Fabrics often used?”
The spun polyester fabrics are often used in the following:
- Clothing
- Home Furnishings
- Medical and Hygienic Products
- Outdoor Applications
- Technical Textiles
- And in Cushions too
Advantages of spun polyester fabrics cushions include:
- Relatively affordable.
- Durable and can last for many years with proper care.
- Easy to clean and does not require a lot of maintenance.
- They come in a variety of colors and styles to suit any taste or decor.
Disadvantages of spun polyester fabrics cushions include:
- It can be less comfortable than other types of cushions.
- They may not hold their shape as well as other types of cushions.
- They can be less breathable than other types of cushions, which may make them uncomfortable in warm weather.
Fitt Design explained the difference between Polyester and Cotton in clothing beautifully.
We ran a quick test on the difference between the two for water resistance.
Now with our Episode’s main stars, the big two: Olefin and Sunbrella
The main difference between them and Polyester Fabrics is that they are made to be durable and with a custom look.
3- Olefin Fabric (A Superior Outdoor Fabric with an Eco-Friendly Twist)
“What is Olefin Fabric?”
Olefin is a lightweight, smooth woven cloth. It has an elegant appearance that makes it an appealing fabric for indoor and outdoor use.
STORYTIME:Â
In 1957, Giulio Natta of Italy invented olefin, the trade name for polypropylene fabric (a synthetic thermoplastic polymer derived from oil and natural gas production)
Giulio Natta and Karl Ziegler’s invention of a method for producing polypropylene was rewarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1963.
The chemists were able to convert polypropylenes into fibres with the help of titanium as a catalyst. This allowed for the production of olefin fabric, which is still used today.
Do you want to profit from the Cushion business? No worries we will contact you.
“Why is Olefin Fabrics considered superior?”
-
- Less expensive – The procedure for making Olefin is readily available. As a result, Olefin is less expensive than Sunbrella materials.
- Easy to clean – Olefin Cushion covers are not troublesome for washing and to be removed, it’s stain-resistant. (Oil-based stains are tough to remove)
- Environmentally friendly– Propylene was traditionally burned off during oil production since it was considered to have few practical applications. Now, however, outdated waste material is recycled into polypropylene or Olefin. There is no land or water consumption during manufacturing, resulting in a low carbon footprint. Furthermore, the fibre itself is highly recyclable and can be re-extruded up to 10 times to create new products.
- Comfortable – Olefin is a low-density, high-performance, non-staining, and non-allergenic material. Because it does not transmit static charges, it is extremely smooth and soft.
- Water-resistant –Water is wicked away and dries off rapidly when it comes into contact with this material.
- Durable – This material is quite long-lasting and can withstand a lot of usage abuse.
- Colourfast – Production utilizes Olefin’s colorfastness, which is enhanced by dying.
- Versatile – This material comes in a variety of colors, patterns, and designs, making it very adaptable.
- Does not transmit static charge – Unlike Sunbrella’s, olefin fabric is resistant to static electricity. — a small but important consideration when you’re lounging on your patio furniture wearing shorts!
Weak against heat
Nothing is perfect even the Olefin Fabric.
Keeping it away from hot surfaces is the ultimate solution because it’s easy to be melted. And it’s preferable to be air-dried after it is washed. “No Patrick! don’t dry it in the dryer!”Â
4- Sunbrella Fabric
I’m pretty sure that there is no need for me to talk about Sunbrella Fabric right? It’s very known.
But, one more time for the newcomers:
Sunbrella has been the most popular type of solution-dyed acrylic fabric for many years. The most fade-resistant, water-resistant, and mildew-resistant. Eco-Friendly too.
Not to forget it’s easy to clean. Bring soap, water and you are good to go.
Features:
- Fade-resistant – Although not totally resistant to the sun’s rays, Sunbrella may endure up to 1,500 hours of exposure before becoming discoloured.
- Water-resistant – Although Sunbrella isn’t completely waterproof, it does a good job of keeping moisture off.
- Mildew resistant – The material resists the development of mildew, Because of its water-resistant nature,
- Comfortable – Sunbrella is also more comfortable and pleasant to the touch than canvas and polyester, in particular.
- Cool – Synthetic-dyed acrylics, retain a pleasant temperature even when exposed to continual strong sunlight.
- Durable – Sunbrella fabric is extremely durable and resilient owing thanks to its special chemical technique.
- Stylish – The Sunbrella Fabrics is available in a wide range of eye-catching colors, styles, and designs.
Even tho it has all these tempting features but let’s not forget that nothing is perfect, and what’s the downside of Sunbrella Fabric? Â
Expensive
compared to other fabrics it’s a bit pricy, but is it worth it? depends.
Not fully comfortable
Don’t get me wrong, Sunbrella Fabric is very soft but when it’s compared to the comfort level that Olefin provides, it loses.
Transmits Static Electricity
Is that even a big deal?
“Is Sunbrella a good choice for cushions?”
Sunbrella Fabric is your ultimate choice if you are looking for QUALITYÂ Because it delivers what it says.
Remember, your job is not just to make money out of your customers, NO! It’s to generate customers and keep them for the long run, making them your loyal clients.
As a businessman like you, you should consider the quality first, then the profit.
Comparison
The Big two’s (fight):
Let’s make a quick comparison between the both of them, and pick up a winner:
Olefin | Sunbrella | Winner | |
---|---|---|---|
Cost | Cheaper | Expensive | Olefin |
Environmental | Eco-friendly | Eco-friendly | Draw |
Moisture | Water-resistant | Water-resistant | Draw |
Sun & Heat | UV resistant | UV resistant | Draw |
Durability | Yes | Yes | Draw |
Warranty | 3 Years | 5 Years | Sunbrella |
Maintenance & Care | Easy to | Easy to | Draw |
Comfort | soft and comfortable | soft and comfortable | Draw |
Even tho it’s kinda draw, but Sunbrella steps ahead by a few millimetres, let’s take off our hats for the king on his throne for over 30 years now!
The truth is that, while some types of Sunbrella are easier to maintain than others, there is no confusion in how to keep it looking nice and clean. However, not everyone is able to recycle this stuff because it is difficult to do so, and it isn’t really biodegradable, which limits many potential clients from purchasing.
So sleep on it before making a decision for buying wholesale cushions for outdoor furniture.
Here is a video from 2015 made by Sunnland Patio Explaining WHY Sunbrella Fabric is the king in the market.
Another Video shows a live test for the material
We ourselves made a short test for Olefin water resistance, judge by yourself.
MOST WATCH! Probably the best one minute and 37 seconds you will spend in your life (better than that 20 seconds on bed)
And the last video (which is my favourite) from Sunbrella themselves, showed us the real performance and value of the fabric.
“So, which Fabric material is better for outdoor furniture?”
Sunbrella Fabric is a high-quality choice for outdoor cushions, but it can be difficult to recycle. Although Olefin is less expensive, it may not be as environmentally friendly or comfortable as Sunbrella. Ultimately, the decision depends on what’s most important to you! (Choose Sunbrella)
